ERL Coach

LEVEL 1

Completing the two-day Level 1 course will enable coaches to introduce the sport of rugby league to new participants. The key emphasis is on the coaching of core skills, whilst a module on ‘team organisation’ will give coaches the basic knowledge needed to play the game. ‘How to coach’ is also an important element of the course, and finally there are modules on sports psychology and physiology.

There are two delivery options:

  1. Two days on course, face-to-face delivery.
  2. One day (equivalent) home study, prior to attending one day on course. The home study MUST be completed prior to attending the course.

We would always recommend Option 1, two days on course, as the benefits of coach interaction, the sharing of experiences and ideas, is invaluable. However, where countries have difficulties due to geography, time availability and work commitments, or finance, then they may adopt Option 2.

Coaches who attend and successfully complete the course will be CERTIFIED for 12 months, enabling them to coach. In order to be ACCREDITED (qualified), they must complete post-course work (CATO) within that 12 month period. If they fail to do so their certification will be withdrawn.

CATO

This is a programme of continued professional development in four categories (consolidation-application-team-observation) which allows coaches to become accredited at Level 1 and eligible to apply for the Level 2 qualification after 12 months active coaching.

  • Consolidation and Application – 12 months: coaches should plan, deliver, and review 6 linked coaching sessions appropriate to the team / group they are coaching. At least one of these sessions should be observed by a coach educator. Upon completion of the 6 linked sessions coaches should provide a self-review of their coaching, which identifies 3 development points.

LEVEL 2

The Level 2 qualification is a four day course, with an emphasis on playing the game. Coaches will further develop their coaching of key core skills , but will also address key areas of the game such as the ruck. There will be a focus on using small-sided games to develop decision making and problem solving skills in players, plus further modules on psychology, physiology, and lifestyle management.

Applicants must be accredited Level 1 coaches with at least 12 months coaching experience post-Level 1.

Again there are two delivery options:

  1. Four days on course, face-to-face delivery
  2. Two days (equivalent) home study, prior to attending two days on course. The home study MUST be completed prior to attending the course.

For the same reasons outlined at Level 1, we would always recommend Option 1.

Coaches who attend and successfully complete the course will be CERTIFIED for 24 months, enabling them to coach. In order to be ACCREDITED (qualified) they must complete post-course work (CATO+) within the 24 month period or lose their certification.

CATO +

CATO+ is a programme of continued professional development in four categories (consolidation, application, team, observation) which allows coaches to become accredited at  Level 2  and, upon completion, makes them eligible to apply for Level 1 coach educator training.

Team and Observation

  1. GAME REVIEWS

You are asked to complete FIVE (5) match reviews   After each review you must identify the key coaching points which you wish to address in the training sessions before the next match. These might be team or individual- specific or both. In the next match review discuss how successful your interventions have been.

  1. PLAYER PROFILING TASK

Select a player from your team and, using the template provided, profile the player during the period of your game reviews (Task 1), both in training and during the games. Complete the review form at the end of the period. Discuss your findings with the player and arrive at an agreed profile. Prepare an action plan for the player which focuses on key elements of the profile.

  1. COACHING ANALYSIS / TEXT REVIEW

Select a coaching text (or film) for review / analysis. Write a review of the selected text, minimum of 250 words, describing the main messages, any positives or negatives you would note, and how highly you would recommend it to other coaches. Identify how this might influence your coaching going forward.

  1. COACH SELF-REVIEW

Self-reflection is a vital part of coaching. When you have completed the above tasks take time to think about and evaluate your coaching over this period. Complete the self-review form
